Transforming the lives of vulnerable children

NPH UK is one of 21 NPH entities worldwide. We support 3,800 vulnerable children from low-income households and communities across Latin America and the Caribbean with scholarships to attend school, meals and healthcare.

Education: a key part of what NPH does

In Haiti, we run the only specialist paediatric hospital, St. Damien, which provided over 73,5000 services and treatments in 2020.

We also provide a home in a safe and loving family environment to over 2,500 orphaned, abandoned and at-risk girls and boys in Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico and Peru.

In the UK we run fundraising and volunteer programmes to support the work of NPH in Latin America and the Caribbean. Read more about ways to help or donate now.

A history of care for children

On a hot summer day in 1954, a young boy entered a church in Cuernavaca, Mexico. His name was Carlos, and his hunger drove him to steal money from the collection box. Carlos was arrested and due to receive a harsh sentence for his crime. The newly ordained priest of the church, Father William B. Wasson, asked the court to show mercy. He asked the judge for custody of Carlos so that he could feed him, clothe him, and provide a home for him. The judge accepted. In fact, the judge continued to send boys to Father Wasson. By the end of the year, 32 boys were in his care and Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH, Spanish for “Our Little Brothers and Sisters”) was born.

A safe family home for children

NPH offers vulnerable children a way out of poverty. We give children healthcare, an education and nutritious food. Most importantly, they receive unconditional love. Wherever possible NPH programmes support children in their own homes, with their own families. If that is not possible, they may join the NPH family in one of our homes. Read more about what we do.

More NPH fundraising entities to support vulnerable children

Since NPH was set up in 1954, we have been expanding our network and now work in 21 countries. At the core of our mission is childcare expertise in 9 countries: Bolivia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Peru.

Throughout our network we raise resources and awareness to support NPH’s work with children. Most of our financial support currently comes from Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, UK and USA.

Programmes in 9 countries

Thanks to the financial support from NPH UK, the NPH family has continued to grow too. Since 1954, we have provided a secure and loving home to more than 20,000 boys and girls throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Today, NPH runs child protection and community programmes  in Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Peru.

Children’s growing needs

The needs are much greater than they were in 1954. Issues of poverty, violence, migration, climate change, social unrest and dangerous conditions in Latin American countries make our work more important than ever. According to the UNICEF 2019 report on the status of children in Latin America and the Caribbean, 72 million children under 14 live in poverty. 12.6 million children are out of school. Over 5 million children under the age of 5 suffer from chronic malnutrition. 26.5 million children live in areas at high risk of flooding or droughts. There are 7 million migrants under 18 in the Americas.
